Construction on a multi-use pedestrian/bicycle pathway along Wootton Parkway between West Edmonston Dr. and Rockville Pike will occur shortly. This is the doted green line, in this location, on the Bikeway Master Plan graphic below. Surveying stakes are already in place, indicating the siting of this project. The objective in this construction is widening the existing partial sidewalk (to standard multi-use path width) and completing the pathway connection along the west/north roadway edge. This will connect existing pathways that now terminate at West Edmonston and First St./Viers Mill Rd. (recently completed) from the opposite directions. This is the last piece of the Millenium Trail, a multi-use non-motorized pathway that circles the City and constitutes an important route for alternative non-vehicular transportation in the area.
Construction of this pathway will occur throughout the fall and may involve minor sporadic disruption to the near lane of Wootton Parkway and intersections with West Edmonston Dr., Fleet St. stub and the driveway exit from Ritchie Center. Some pathway work may linger into springtime to be completed in necessary good weather conditions.

After presentation to City Council and extensive review, the proposed Bikeway Master Plan updates were approved and enacted.
An Open House on the draft Bikeway Master Plan is schedule for Nov. 20, 7:00pm at the Lincoln Park Community Center.
This is intended as a last preliminary public review for the plan prior to submission to the City Council and
expected public hearings toward enacting the plan.

The City of Rockville is updating its Bikeway Master Plan (first released in 1998). A draft of the proposed updated plan was released for public review and comment on July 8th. The plan comprehensively describes a network of bike routes for the City. The initial public comment period runs through September, 2003. Then, public comments will be integrated and the plan redrafted and submitted formally to the Planning Commission and Mayor and Council. Formal public hearings will be held by those bodies, aimed toward approval and adoption of the updated plan.
The direct effect of this proposed Bikeway Plan update on Hungerford is limited. Most of the proposed Hungerford bikeways are already established. Existing bikeways include shared-street paths along West Edmonston and Cabin John and mixed-use paths through Stoneridge Pond and Elwood Smith Park. Also, wrapping around the neighborhood is the Millenium Trail (Wootton Parkway mixed-use path) including the West Edmonston to Rockville Pike stretch which is planned and will be constructed soon. One new bikeway proposed is a cononection to RMHS through the Fleet Street right-of-way (behind Ritchie Center). Lastly, this map shows a new shared-street path along the 600 and 700 block of Harrington Road. However, we are advising and expect this configuration to change to following Cabin John and East Lynfield to connect to the paths at Elwood Smith Park.
