Greetings from Richard Montgomery High School!

I would like to share with the community specific details regarding the construction project for the new Richard Montgomery High School.

The official groundbreaking ceremony will take place on July 9th at 2:00 p.m. on the athletic field at RMHS.  All members of the community are invited to attend this historical event.

The construction process is scheduled to begin on July 11th and should be completed by early August, 2007.  Students and staff will continue to operate in the existing facility until moving time. Once the move has occurred, the existing facility will be demolished and the space will become athletic fields.  Field construction should be completed in the spring of 2008.

The new school will face Fleet Street and will include separate entrances for student parking and the bus loop. Parents will have two roads leading to different drop off areas behind the building. Staff will park in front of the school, adjacent to the bus loop on Fleet Street.  The rear entrances will include the current Richard Montgomery Drive, which will end at the new stadium and another entrance that will be built north of Richard Montgomery Drive. Parking space will increase significantly.

Upon completion, the building will have a student capacity of approximately 2,000 students with a core space capacity of 2,400 students.  The new facility will feature a four-story building with a two-story central atrium or “main street,” connecting the cafeteria on the west end and the auditorium on the east side.  This open design will provide natural light into most adjacent classrooms. The auditorium seating capacity will be at 900 seats, slightly smaller than our current auditorium but with higher technological capabilities. Most classrooms will function as standard teaching areas and as computer labs.

These are exciting times for Richard Montgomery High School. This administration will work diligently with MCPS and the community to ensure that this project is completed successfully   and on time with a minimum of disruptions to the students, staff and community.

Ms. Laurie Bourdeaux is our Construction Site Coordinator.  Please contact her if you have questions and/or concerns.
