Letter/Announcement:

Public Forum on County Planning

MONTGOMERY COUNTY COUNCIL
ROCKVILLE, MARYLAND

NANCY FLOREEN
COUNCILMEMBER AT-LARGE

 Dear Friend:

No doubt you have been following the press accounts of the problems in Clarksburg.  The situation there has put a spotlight on how the County oversees development, and has presented a unique opportunity to focus on our current planning processes.  As a result, many of us have been thinking about needed improvements.  But I believe this discussion only has meaning if it includes our residents.

Please join me on Saturday, December 10th, at 9:30 am, on the Montgomery County campus of Johns Hopkins University to take a strategic look at how we should best manage planning and development in the County.

The name I’ve given to this is Planning and Development You Can Rely On; Accountability in a Post-Clarksburg World.  I’ve put together a panel of long term local experts, including former Planning Board Chairs, civic activists, and development industry representatives to make some comments, and then we will invite your recommendations as to whether we should be looking at particular structural or process changes in order to enhance our planning process and procedures.  In particular, I’d like to get your input on specific enhancements you believe would help us ensure reliability and accountability in the planning, development, and implementation processes.

None of the panelists has a dog in the Clarksburg fight; and this discussion will not be about what happened there.  The forum is about the future and making it better.

I hope you will attend this important dialogue.  But I also hope that you will think about the issues carefully beforehand.  The attached flyer lays out the format.  If you represent a group, I would appreciate it if you could let your members know about the forum.  Also, please put the attached questions on your next association meeting agenda so that you can get input from your neighbors and members or encourage them to contact me with comments.

The success of this forum will rely on constructive, creative, and specific recommendations for change.
