Re: Changing our name: Hungerford Civic Assoc.
To Whom it May Concern,
The former Hungerford-Stoneridge Civic Association officially voted in general meeting, on February 21, 2001 to change our name. We are simplifying it to the Hungerford Civic Association. This name change signifies no change in representation or boundaries. Rather, we aim to simplify our moniker and eliminate the suggestion of our former dual name that we are somehow a two-part entity. We are a single, cohesive neighborhood. Our organization continues to represent the 600+ residences of the same area formerly called Hungerford-Stoneridge. We also desire that our neighborhood be referred to in this same simplified manner in the future.
Historically, our neighborhood was developed as two sub-divisions, Hungerford and Stoneridge. However, we long ago dispensed with attaching any significance to this original sub-division delineation. In fact, where this boundary stood is lost upon most present residents. From this obscured past, our organization inherited a monstrous hyphenated name that had lost any duality of meaning. In contemplating simplifying our name, adopting one part of our dual name was an obvious choice. We selected the Hungerford part due the more recognizable aspects of the leading name and its historical significance in local history. As the leading part, our neighborhood often was quickly referred to just as Hungerford. Therefore, simplifying our name to this quick reference provides better continuity of understanding that we mean the same area. We also find name association to Hungerford Tavern and Hungerford Resolves to be a positive distinction of this name. As far as anyone can tell, the Stoneridge part of our name was simply a marketing label stamped on that sub-division when new and holds no particular historical significance. Therefore, we have selected the Hungerford part of our former name.
We are focusing the distribution of this letter within the City government as the most local of government jurisdictions. We appreciate the effort of all involved to recognize our name change and proliferate it throughout your administrative domain and other organizations.
Sincerely,
David Hill,
President.
